Tender Loving Care (TLC) Training

Tender Loving Care is a collection of methods that  can be used to soothe, comfort and calm people who are dying. It is about doing small things that make a big difference; and helping dying people to feel loved and cherished, rather than alone, frightened or distressed.  TLC is all about making dying people feel more peaceful and accepting.

I teach TLC at the Fireside Lodge for friends and relatives of dying people, and offer it to end-of-life practitioners and volunteers in hospices, hospitals, care homes, parish communities and local cancer support organisations.

TLC was launched by Felicity Warner, the founder of the Soul Midwives School five years ago and has been taught to over 60 organisations (some small and some very large ones), some of whom have signed up for repeat annual trainings for their staff.

TLC fits in with several important aspects of government recommended end-of-life guidelines - as well as the Gold Standards accreditation for care homes.
Training Content
Vertical Divider
  • Importance of TLC  - and how it affects dying people
  • 10 simple TLC tips to soothe someone who is dying
  • The four stages of dying - how to recognise them and how to help someone through them
  • Gentle Touch - a light form of touching a dying person in a caring, non-intrusive way in order to pamper, calm and reassure them
  • Listening and holding the silence
  • Standing vigil - being a steady presence in the dying room; how to recognise the signs of approaching death; how to create a loving space at the bedside - in all situations - even in the Accidents and Emergencies department.

Reiki-training in combination with TLC course

A short, targeted introduction to Reiki skills* is available to TLC registrants. Reiki is a self-development and healing system that was rediscovered in Japan in the early 20th century. It is an excellent method to create more balance, calm, and peacefulness; both for dying people and for carers (it can be used for self-healing). Read more.

* Please note: This 4-hour course does not provide you with a Reiki 1 qualification or certificate - but will enable you to use Reiki techniques to strengthen yourself and to support a dying person in the final phases of life.

Content of the Reiki Course
  • What is Reiki and how can it be used for dying people?
  • You will receive the Reiki Attunements
  • Reiki self-treatment and meditations
  • Using Reiki during the four phases of dying
  • Special tips of using Reiki at the bedside and in hospitals
  • Ethical principles when giving Reiki
